Owner's Description

Purchased on 2/22/2012. This is a medal created to celebrate 500 years of German Horse Racing. It was designed by Hans Schwegerle, and according to Hasselmann only 65 medals were struck (he describes the medal as very rare). It bears the hallmark of Schwegerle's signature below the left-facing horse and the German text. The reverse of the medal bears a renaissance horseman facing right, and a jockey facing left, joined in the middle by a handshake. The figures are pictured above the dates 1436 and 1936, respectively. Hans Schwegerle was born on May 2 1882 in Lübeck , Germany and died on September 4, 1950 in Munich, Germany. He was a very well known German sculptor and medalist, particularly prolific during the years of the Third Reich. Schwegerle was the son of a court photographer and he began his studies in May 1900 with William of Rümann at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Since 1917 he was a professor at the Academy where he worked as a sculptor, but specialized in the design of medals, having designed and produced over 600 medals during his lifetime. The medal was specifically struck to commemorate "das Braune Band von Deutschland", or "The Brown-Ribbon Race of Germany" in 1936. The race for the "Brown Ribbon of Germany", is a flat course race over 2400 meters for horses of three years and older. Between 1934 and 1944, the races were held annually in the summer at the Riem racecourse near Munich. The Brown Ribbon race was an important day among an entire week of scheduled racing, and amateur riders competed for the great international recognition and honor. Besides from the homeland of Germany, winning horses in the annual race also came from France and Italy. The best known winner of this race was Nereid owned by Henry Thyssen, who won in 1936 against the much favored Corrida from France.
