Owner's Description

Purchased on 11/15/2011. This is yet another Kingdom of Hannover design featuring the Saxon Steed. This horse design is quite different from the others in my horses collection, with much thinner features and beautiful mane and tail detail. This is one of the final issues of the German State of the Kingdom of Hannover, as the kingdom dissolved in 1866 when it was conquered by the Prussians in the Austro-Prussian War, and became renamed as the "Province of Hannover". This coin is noted with a denomination of 1 Groschen, and further clarification that "30 Einen Thaler", translated as "30 to a dollar (thaler)". Beginning in 1821 in Prussia, a new currency system was introduced in the German States in which the Groschen was worth 1/30 of a Thaler (Taler). This is in contrast to the older Groschen which was worth 1/24 of a Reichsthaler. This newly monetized Groschen was often called the Silbergroschen (Prussia, since 1821) or the Neugroschen (Saxony, since 1840) to distinguish it from older Groschen. Following German unification and decimalization, the Groschen was replaced by the 10 Pfennig coin; however, the term "Groschen" remained a nickname for the 10 Pfennig coin until the introduction of the Euro in the early 2000s.
