Owner's Description

Purchased on eBay on 4/7/2011. This is a proof strike of the cupro-nickel 20 stotinki. The coin has a diameter of 20mm and a proof mintage of only 10,000 pieces. The stotinki is the decimal unit of the Bulgarian unit of currency the lev -- 100 stotinki make up 1 lev. The obverse depicts the Madara Rider or Madara Horseman (Bulgarian: Madarski konnik). This is an early medieval large rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of Madara. The Madara Rider is depicted on the obverse of smaller Bulgarian coins (1 to 50 stotinki) and is also planned to appear on Bulgaria's Euro coinage when Bulgaria adopts the Euro as currency (expected around 2013-2014). The original rock relief depicts a majestic horseman about 70 feet above ground level on an almost vertical 330 feet high cliff. The horseman, facing right, is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet; the scene symbolically depicts a military triumph. The full relief also contains a following dog behind the horse (as seen in the relief depiction in the picture).
