Owner's Description

Medal, 1915, AR, PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPO DOLLAR, San Francisco, CA, So Called Dollar HK-399 Silver, NGC MS65 GEM, Cert# 1786295-004. Designed by famous sculptor and commemorative coin designer Robert Aitken, the obverse features a winged Mercury opening the Panama Canal locks through which passes the vessel Argo, the symbol of navigation. The Panama Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915 was celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal; Rv. two females representing the two hemispheres hold cornucopias above earth. Below is a seagull the official bird of the Canal Zone. These medals were sold by Farran Zerbe, Chief of the Coin and Medal Department at the Exposition, responsible for all sales of commemorative coins and medals. This example accompanies the original envelope of issue (1915) and as such is a major rarity. The silver HK from this Expo is significantly scarcer than the other two types, and, of course, rarer still is the original envelope as most were tossed away as having no value, or were folded around the medal and deteriorated over time. This piece has been in a private reference collection of PPIE Exonumia for a number of years (pre-dating NGC certification). Nearly 100% fully struck. The Obverse toning is a sort of speckled grey-brown with hints of darker red, and yellow highlights at the rim; the Reverse toning is a bit more colorful with some brighter red and green highlights in addition. Ex Alex Pancheco Collection.
