Medal, 1959, AR, RUSH TO THE ROCKIES, COLORADO, United States, SO CALLED DOLLAR, HK-542, NGC MS64, Cert# 3436154-002. Colorado Rush to the Rockies Dollar, Official Medal, Air Force Academy, 33.6mm. Beautiful Original Toning with shades of blue. Official Medal of the Colorado: Rush to the Rockies Centennial. Both the obverse and reverse has reflective slight blueish, and mostly silver color surfaces. Great fields and eye-appeal. The obverse has a covered wagon scene, and a small circle below containing a buffalo. It reads above: “Colorado / Rush to the Rockies Centennial, 1859 to 1959”. The reverse has the Seal of Academy, with 13 stars around. Below it reads: MCMLIX and above it reads: “United States of America, Air Force Academy”. History: The Colorado Rush to the Rockies Centennial was done to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first mass settlement in the state following the discovery of gold in 1859 in Central City. The celebration included centennial celebrations of 19 cities including Denver and Colorado Springs. Each town had events and offered distinct entertainment activities. Denver acted first; a Council was created for the Centennial Commemorative Authority in 1955. Similar Committees were established in most communities. The celebration was officially dubbed "Rush to the Rockies" Celebration, a focal point was pioneer village erected in downtown Denver, complete with blacksmith shop, livery stable, saloon, sheriff’s office, etc. The highlight of entire year was the First Commencement and Official Dedication by President Eisenhower, June 3, of the new $136,000,000 U.S. Air Force Academy located against spectacular Rampart Range near Colorado Springs. The official Medal was authorized by 86th Congress and was struck at Philadelphia Mint.
