Roman Empire Geta as Caesar AD 209-211 AR Denarius RIC IV 20a: Similar to Sear #7200 Coin Grades Ch XF - Strike 4 of 5 - Surface 5 of 5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Shows the bare-headed, draped bust of Geta right with the legend P SEPTIMIVS GETA CEAS Rev. Shows Securitas enthroned l, holding globe with the legend SECVRIT IMPERII In Roman mythology, Securitas was the goddess of security, especially the security of the Roman Empire. Publius Septimius Geta (7 March 189 – 19 December 211) was a Roman Emperor co-ruling with his father Septimius Severus and his older brother Caracalla from 209 to his death. When Septimius Severus died in Eboracum in the beginning of 211, Caracalla and Geta were proclaimed joint emperors and returned to Rome. The shared throne was not a success: the brothers argued about every decision, from law to political appointments. Caracalla tried to murder Geta during the festival of Saturnalia without success. Later in December he arranged a meeting with his brother in his mother's apartments, and had him murdered. Geta died in the arms of his mother. Following Geta's assassination, Caracalla damned his memory and ordered his name to be removed from all inscriptions. The now sole emperor also took the opportunity to get rid of his political enemies, on the grounds of conspiracy with the deceased. Cassius Dio stated that around 20,000 persons of both sexes were killed and/or proscribed during this time. Have you ever thought about the bold detailed achieved on greek and Roman coinage and then compared that to the flat almost nondescript coinage of the dark ages. This to me is a classic example of how knowledge or skills understood a 1,000 years before the dark ages was lost and had to be regained. My cost $0 (This coin was part of a group purchase.
