Owner's Description

Roman Empire Hadrian AD 117-138 AR Denarius RIC II 198: Sear #3483 Coin Grades Ch VF - Strike 5 of 5 - Surface 3 of 5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Legend reads HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS and shows a laur. Bust of Hadrain r., with light drapery on the far shoulder Rev. Shows a simpulum (ladle with a long handle), sprinkler, jug and lituus (these being emblems of the augurate and pontificate). The lituus was a crooked wand (similar in shape to the top part of a crosier) used as a cult instrument in ancient Roman religion by augurs. The augur was a priest and official in the classical world Hadrian, as was his predecessor Trajan, was born at Italica in Spain (AD 76). Hadrian’s father died when he was 10 following which he entered the childless household of Trajan and eventually married the daugther of Trajan’s favorite niece. Hadrian became emperor after Trajan’s widowed empress Plotina stated that Trajan had confided to her his desire to adopt Hardian as his heir. Hardian paid particular attention to frontier defences, his best known undertaking being known as Hadrian’s Wall in nothern England. My cost for this coin was $60.
