Owner's Description

The obverse design: "The standing figure of a buckskin-clad Trans- Appalachian pioneer of the 18th Century is symbolic of the motto of WEST VIRGINIA: MONTANI SEMPRE LIBERI, "Mountaineers Always Free." The self-reliance and independence of the early settler from Tidewater, Virginia facing the perils of the frontier, is no less characteristic of the West Virginian of today. Inscribed on a mountainside, the dates 1863/1963, noting the centennial of admission of the "Mountain State" as the 35th in the Union. The reverse design: "The handsome State Capitol is shown, on the bank of the Kanawha River, between sprays of the state tree-sugar maple-and the state flower - the rhododendron. In the sub-surface rock below, a pelycosaur of the Carboniferous Era. The design is symbolic of the great resources of the state: progressive government, tremendous timber reserves, water and mineral resources - coal, salt, petroleum/gas ceramic and glass minerals. Above, STATEHOOD CENTENNIAL, and the reverse seal motto LIBERTAS E FIDELITATE, referring to the creation of the state during the Civil War from the territory of Virginia, through loyalty to the Union". Beginning with this medal the price was again raised. Singles were now $3.50 for singles and $6.50 for a pair.
