Reported production numbers on the Variety I - Thin was 3,700. The obverse design features "A sector of the earth, as seen from space, showing the Great Lakes Basin as the heart of the North American continent, with Seaway routes to Great Britian and Northern Europe; the Mediterranean; Africa; the Panama Canal and South America. Beyond the globe, the rising sun heralds a new era of trade and economic growth. Legend surrounding: ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY / BRINGING WORLD TRADE TO THE MIDCONTINENT / INAUGURAL YEAR . 1959. Reverse design: "This design pays tribute to the longstanding friendship of Canada and America, to which the Seaway, in the broadestsence, is a monument. Canada, left, clasps hands with America, right, before a background scene of a ship entering the Snell Lock, with the Seaway Route continuing to the horizon. Sprays of maple and oak are footnotes are footnotes beneath each figure. Canada holds a high tension transmission tower, emblematic of the hydropower aspects of the project, while America cradles a symbol of navigation, a model of the "Walk-in-the-Water" first steam vessel to sail the Great Lakes proper 160 years ago (at that time), its name given by the amazed Lakes area Indians.
