A "Barbarous Issue" intended to pass as Coinage of the Roman Empire AE 'Nummus' Issued during the Constantinian Era AU - Strike 5/5 - Surface 5/5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( To me this type of coin is no different from the celtic coins that were struck to look like Greek coins. As such this coin belongs in my collection since it definately adds to the overall numismatic diversity I am looking for. I truly appreciate wonderfully persevered silver or gold coins whether they are ancient, medieval, or more modern issues. However what really gets me to quickly turn my head are well preserved “copper” coins (here “copper” refers to copper, bronze or brass coins, i.e., copper based coins). The older such copper coins the more I appreciate them. I hope you can therefore understand my pure joy when one of my submittals came back with the following four coins: Ancient Barbarous Issue of Roman Coinage - AE 'Nummus' Constantinian Era - NGC AU Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5 Roman Provincial Coinage - Sev.Alexander, AD 222-235 - AE26 Rev. eagle w/wreath - NGC Ch XF Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5 Ancient Roman Provincial Bronze Coinage - AE28 As Caesar. Obv Philip II - NGC AU Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5 Byzantine Coinage - Justinian I, AD 527-565 - AE 20 Nummi Cyzicus. Yr.25 (AD 551/2) - NGC XF* Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5 Although Mint State ancient coppers may exist, the highest NGC grade coppers I have seen are Ch AU * Fine style. Yes such grades are better than mine but I can not explain how truly pleased I am to own these four coins. Although I have a few high grade silver and billon ancients I am most pleased with several of my ancient bronzes such as this one. My pleasure is a result of the coins grade, its condition and its cost. This coin grades AU with condition descriptors of Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5. It is my understanding Barbarous issues don’t get much attention but I will not turn my back to any ancient bronze in this grade and condition. My cost was $91 (eBay)..
