Owner's Description

United States Coinage Capped-Bust Half Dollar - Lettered Edge (1807-36; except 1816) 1827 "Square 2" Overton #106 Rarity - 2 AU-58 Census - 1827 all vatieties = 1507 NGC graded coins - 325 with this grade - 428 graded higher Census - 1827 this variety = 32 NGC graded coins - 12 with this grade - 4 graded higher The design of the capped-bust half dollar minted from 1807 to 1836 was the work of John Reich who worked at the mint from 1807 to 1817. The reverse's eagle is reported to have been copied from the the United States infantry officers' buttons. Somewhat of a flap developed over the obverse design. Charges were made that the design for lady liberty portrayed “the artist’s fat mistress (which may have been true, though there is no evidence of this), and for having Ms. Liberty not only extravagantly buxom but wearing a pilleus, or liberty cap, on her head. Evidently Jefferson did defend the cap by stating that the cap was not meant to be a pilleus but the more fashionable head covering of the time – specifically a mobcap, like the one found on the portraits of Martha Washington but less elaborate and minus the vail.To be perfectly honest I thought this might come back UNC even though I bought it as an AU. I have seen worse looking UNC's. Anyway whether and AU or XF or UNC I am totally pleased to have this coin and it will remain in my collection for some time. NGC’s U.S. Price Guide (Powered by NumisMedia) values this AU-58 at $840 and an MS-65 at $9,950. I am sorry but I don’t think the little additional luster you may get with an MS-65 is worth $9,100. Unless you are simply a grade chaser if you can not be satisfied with this coin you can not be satisfied with an MS-65. My cost for this coin was $664
