Owner's Description

An Issue of the Celts in the area of the Lower Danube 2nd - 1st centuries BC Tetradrachm: Sear #216 Grade is XF, Strike 4/5, Surface 5/5 Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( This coin is to be a representation of a tetradrachm issued in Thasos c. 150 BC (Sear #1759) The Obv. is a representation of a young Dionysos facing right The rev. is a representation of a naked Herakles stg, l. the "dots" to either side and below Hercules represents the Greek legend on the Thasos coin this issue was intending to pass as. This coin is in my collection because dare I say, I think this coin is cute as well as crude. If I was on the Antique Roadshow with this coin they would call this a great example of folk art - for this reason this coin has become one of my favorites. I believe this is a Sear #216 My cost was $261
