Owner's Description

Colonial Coinage Massachusetts 1788 With Period – R-L10 a common variety Census - 115 NGC graded coins - 10 with this grade - 21 graded higher AU-53 Brown When Massachusetts decided to issue coinage it did not follow the approach taken in Connecticut, New Jersey and Vermont where these states entered into private contracts with independent mints. The state of Massachusetts opened a state run mint that was authorized to mint gold, silver and copper coinage although only copper coins were produced. The state produced cents and half cents and were so marked. The cent was produced at weights between 146 – 165 grs. vs. the Tower Mint standard of 152.17 grs. for a halfpence. The half cent was produced t weights between 75 – 83 grs. vs. the Tower Mint standard of 76 grs. for a farthing. The mint stopped production in 1789 because it was losing money and because the U.S. constitution was ratified which prevented the states from issuing money. Both cent and half cent had the same design.
