Germany – Mainz Anselm Franz, Frhr. v. Ingelheim 1678-95 2 Albus – 1691 A.D. XF-45 KM – 184 Census - The only 2 Albus of this variety and date certified by NGC Obv. - 4-Fold arms of Mainz and Ingelhiem in laurel wreath Rev. - Value: II/ALBVS/DATE/INITIALS, in laural wreath The town of Mainz (25 miles west of Frankfurt) was a pre-roman settlement. In the 6th century a bishopric was established in Mainz and in 747 it became an archbishopric. Mainz was a residence and mint of Charlemagne. In 1118 it was declared a free city of the empire, but lost this dignity in 1163 through an unsuccessful revot against ecclesiastical authority. In 1816 Mainz was annexed to Hesse-Darmstadt. My cost was $80.
