Owner's Description

The city of Bern or Berne is the Bundesstadt (federal city, de facto capital) of Switzerland. Bern is also the capital of the Canton of Bern, the second most populous of Switzerland's cantons. In antiquity, a Gaulish oppidum (a Latin word meaning the main settlement in any administrative area of ancient Rome) stood at the site of Bern from the 2nd century BC. In 1353 Bern joined the Swiss Confederacy, becoming one of the "eight cantons" of the formative period of 1353 to 1481. Bern invaded and conquered Aargau in 1415 and Vaud in 1536, as well as other smaller territories, thereby becoming the largest city-state north of the Alps, by the 18th century comprising most of what is today the canton of Berne and the canton of Vaud. In 1848 Bern was made the Federal City (seat of the Federal Assembly) of the new Swiss federal state. This is the silver shooting medal prepared for the 1897 Bern Canton Shooting Festival Richter: 234a, Martin: 149, Krause: 70 Designer: Homberg 45mm Silver Mintage: 1,250 I consider my four larger Swiss Shooting Medals to be small works of art and to some degree master pieces.
