Owner's Description

This is a "Death Medal" issued to honor Maurice, comte de Saxe (German Hermann Moritz Graf von Sachsen) (October 28, 1696 – November 30, 1750). It measures 55mm in diameter and is "white metal." He was the son of Augustus II of Poland and of the countess Aurora Königsmark and was born at Goslar. This guy was absolutely amazing. He was 12 years old his first time in battle. He fought all over Europe and it appears like he never lost a battle. He spent most of his time in service to the King of France where he died with the rank of Marshal General of the King's camps and armies (the highest rank possible). He had many titles including Count of Saxony. The image on the front of this medal is that of the Count as Marshal General of the King’s armies. The reverse shows his tomb in Saint-Thomas Church in Strasbourg, Census – NGC does not provide population info on items such as this.
