Owner's Description

United States Modern Commemorative Coinage Gold Eagle issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the historic first manned powered flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright, which took place on December 17, 1903. 2003-W MS-70 Census - 1,809 NGC graded coins - 1,361 with this grade - 0 graded higher The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The surrounding inscriptions read "Liberty", "In God We Trust", the centennial dates "1903 2003", "Orville & Wilbur Wright", and "First Flight Centennial". The reverse features the Wright 1903 Flyer with an eagle in flight above. Inscriptions include "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum", and "Ten Dollars". FYI – Some Frenchman or French organization offered a cash prize and medal to the individual who could achieve powered flight. That award did not go to the Wright Brothers. That award was given out later to a Brazilian whose plane went from a standing or stopped position, then on to a taxi mode and then from a taxi mode to takeoff and flight. The Wright Brothers plane needed a set of “rails” to slide their plane down since their plane did not have wheels or evidently an engine large enough to permit the type of takeoff we all think of today. Well leave it up to the French to get picky.
