Owner's Description

New Zealand George V 1910 - 1936 3 Pence 1935 XF-40 KM #1 Census - Nine graded by NGC - 1 with this grade - 5 higher - no UNC's Obv. - Crowned bust of George V facing left Rev. – Crossed Patu, value above, date below. (A patu is a generic term for a club used by the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. This item was a hand made weapon used during inter-tribal wars. A patu is mainly used as a striking weapon.) The first European to sight New Zealand was the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman. The Islands were explored by Captain James Cook who annexed the islands to Great Britain. The British government disavowed the annexation for the next 70 years. Great Britain annexed the land in 1840 by treaty with the native chiefs. In 1947 New Zealand was formally extended full internal and external autonomy. It is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. My cost for this coin was $252.
