Owner's Description

Germany – Bavaria Maximilian I 1598 – 1651 2 Kreuzer - 1625 MS-62 KM- 128 Census - 10 graded - three with this grade - seven higher Bavaria was almost denuded of its inhabitants by the 5th century ravages of Odoacer’s troops. This area which was to become South Germany’s largest and most important state was repopulated circa 488-520 by various wandering tribes collectively called the Baiowarii. The Bavarians soon came under Frankish domination and were ruled from 555 to 788 by the dukes of the Agilofing family, then from 788 to 899 Bavaria formed part of the Carolingian Empire. In 911 Arnulf I “the Bad” was chosen duke after driving the Hungarians out of Bavaria. During his reign the first ducal coins were struck using the mints at Regensburg and Salzburg. In 1180 Bavaria came under the rule of Otto I (Count of Wittelsbach) he was the ancestor of all modern rulers of Bavaria. Over time Bavaria was divided among the heirs of various rulers. The last king of Bavaria Ludwig III (1913-18) was forced to abdicate. When I get a coin like this I wonder how much would something like this buy in the 1600's? Coinage started with the pfennig, then the 2, 3, 4 & 5 pfennig coins as well as 1/2 Kreuzer (2 Pf.) & Kreuzer (4 Pf.). So 2 Kreuzer must of had some buying power. I then wonder why the coin did not circulate? I mean I can see a crown size coin staying in a strong box or money bag and being used as part of a large financial transaction as part of a group of coins and not necessarily being used as an individual coin and thus remaining in a high grade. My cost $25.
