Germany – Saxony Johann Georg I 1615-56 1/12 Thaler – 1625-HI XF-40 KM – 71 Census - Although NGC does provide census data on German coins from this time period, this coin has not been included in the NGC census data. Obv. - Oval 2-fold arms in baroque frames, titles of Johann Georg I Rev. - 3 small omately-shaped shields of arms, 2 above 1, small orb divides date at top, titles of August Initially the name Saxony referred to most of present-day northwest Germany, an area inhabited by heathen Saxons. These tribes were conquered by Charlemagne, and in turn became the Germanic advance guard in the struggle with the still heathens Slavs. In 850 Ludolf, a Saxon noble, was named margrave to defend the area. In 1464 Saxony was divided into two lines. The electoral right was obtained by the elder line in 1547. Saxony was one of the more powerful states in central Europe. It became a kingdom in 1806. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, they were forced to cede half its territories to Prussia. My mom was from the small town of Mylau in Saxony, that is the primary reason I wanted this coin in my collection. My cost was $93.
