Owner's Description

Purchased on 9/26/2011. This medal was struck to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was struck at the time of the Sesquicentennial Exposition held in Philadelphia. The exhibitions ran from May 31 to Nov. 30 in 1926, and also featured a "post-exhibition" period from Dec. 1 to 31. Attendance at the Expo was estimated at 6.5 million persons, of which approximately 4.6 million were paid admissions. The actual attendance was in stark contrast to the expected attendance of nearly 25 million. The Expo planning began in 1922, and the grounds where it took place were at League Island Park and the adjacent area, totaling about 1,000 acres in South Philadelphia. Swedish-American Memorial House remains today as a museum; Municipal Stadium, which was built for the exposition, was later renamed JFK stadium but was demolished in 1992. President Coolidge extended broad foreign invitation "for the purpose of exhibiting the progress of United States and other nations in art, science and industry, trade and commerce…". Sixteen states and 43 foreign countries were represented. Federal displays included the U.S. Mint Exhibit. The official U.S. Mint Medal was designed by Albin Polasek and was struck on site at the Mint Exhibit. The medal was struck in copper, bronze, brass, and nickel. This example of the medal is an uncirculated example of the brass version.
