Owner's Description

Purchased on 9/21/2011. This coin has a small mintage of only 10,000 pieces. This is the highest graded example of this coin from NGC. Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kosciuszko was a Polish–Lithuanian and American general and military leader. He is a national hero of Poland, Lithuania, the United States, and Belarus. He led the 1794 Kosciuszko Uprising against Imperial Russia and the Kingdom of Prussia as Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Force. Before commanding the 1794 Uprising, he fought in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel in the Continental Army. In 1783, in recognition of his dedicated service, he was brevetted by the Continental Congress to the rank of brigadier general and became a naturalized citizen of the United States. The design of this beautiful proof coin was based on a painting by Juliusz Fortunat Kossak, a well known Polish historical painter. While the painting was undertaken many years after the death of Kosciuszko, it was meant to be a representation of Kosciuszko in The Battle of Raclawice in 1794, which was one of the first battles of the Polish Kosciuszko Uprising against Russia. The reverse of the coin features the well known Polish Coat of Arms white eagle, which dates to the 900s and the Piast Dynasty.
