Owner's Description

Purchased on 7/10/2011. This is a beautifully designed coin, featuring the four horses pulling a chariot (the quadriga) on the reverse. It was minted in Rome, and bears the bust of Vittorio Emanuele III, the last King of Italy (House of Savoy). In 1946 Italy became a republic, and the royal family was asked to leave the country. Only recently have the ancestors of the Savoy family been allowed to return to Italy. Many thanks to gherrmann44 for calling this beautiful coin to my attention when it was up for auction.
