Owner's Description

Purchased on eBay on 4/10/2011. This coin was minted in a quantity of 888,000 coins and bears the image of a beautiful Irish Hunter horse (also known as the Irish Sport Horse). The Irish Sport Horse has been traditionally used for all purposes, ranging from transportation, to riding, to working land. However, this breed has become increasingly popular as a competition riding horse. It has a naturally athletic ability and jumping talents that lend to it's exceptional ability in show jumping arenas. The horse is globally renowned for being one of the best fox hunting mounts in the world. Ireland produces a great number of Irish Sport Horses each year, many of them selling for large sums of money in the United States and Europe. The Irish half-crown was minted from 1928 through 1967. The coins before 1950 were minted as 75% silver. From 1951 through the end of the series in 1967 coins were made of cupro-nickel. The original design from 1928-1937 bore the text "EIREAAN SOARSTAT" translated as "Irish Free State". The later issues after 1937 bear the text "EIRE" to denote the change of Ireland to the "Republic of Ireland". This issue was demonetized on December 31, 1969 along with the halfpenny.
