Owner's Description

The Liberty Nickel was the copper-nickel five cent coin that put a human face on the denomination. The first pieces that were issued in 1883 did not have the “CENTS” anywhere on the coin. Since the piece was about the same size as a five dollar gold piece, enterprising crooks gold plated some of those coins and tried to pass them as half eagles. After a limited mintage the word “CENTS” was added to the bottom of the reverse, and that problem was solved.

Ironically extensive numbers of the business strike1883 “NO CENTS” nickels were hoarded, and today that coin is common in grades ranging from EF to the low end Mint State grades. The “with CENTS” coins were not hoarded as extensively, which has made them scarcer today despite their higher mintage.
