Owner's Description

After the public rejected the Eisenhower dollar because of its large size, treasury officials proposed a smaller dollar coin that would fit better in pockets and change purses. The new coin depicted early women’s rights advocate, Susan B. Anthony, much to the chagrin of some coin collectors. Early on the mint had floated the idea of reviving the Liberty Cap design that had appeared on the early half cents and large cents.

Despite a different design and an octagonal border within a round planchet the diameter of the Anthony dollar was very similar to that of the quarter. As a result many consumers confused the coin with the quarter and paid a dollar for a 25 cent transaction. All it took was one such incident when someone lost 75 cents for people to take a very negative attitude toward the new dollar coin. Thus the Anthony dollar became just one more failure in the government’s quest to find a suitable dollar coin.
