Owner's Description

Retail Value (Raw): $40

Mintage: 255,000

Comments: The first year of the standard, modern, one ounce, .999 pure silver panda. Silver pandas were minted in 83, 84, 85 & 87 but they had different purities and weights. The 1989 is unusual because I'm not aware of any date varieties for this year although it does have a frosted and bright variety. The particular coin shown here is a frosty variety which is very prooflike.

Watch out for rub marks on the forehead of the pandas for this year in particular. The forehead is the highest point of the 1989 design and it tends to rub against the plastic capsule the coins are packed in. I'll bet at least 3 out of 4 1989 pandas show some signs of damage from that rubbing.

On a personal note, I bought one full sheet of these from a dealer in 1989 simply as an investment in bullion. Who would have thought that one fateful purchase would have lead to the rekindling of my coin hobby in 2004 when I looked at some of my old bullion purchases and decided I wanted to specialize in the panda series and sell the rest off.
