Owner's Description

The 1982 Double Die is a variety i discovered about a year ago or in the late spring of 2015 and is the latest variety to hit the BU Libertad series. The coin listed here is the higest grade given and only two MS68 so far. I held on to the coin for about 7 months before submitting it to NGC for grading because i wasn't exactly sure if the doubling was machine doubling or doubling due to the die. To date there are 6 of these coins that i know of, 5 i submitted and there is a friend and fellow collector i know of that has one raw. The first one i had graded received a MS64 then the others received a MS67, MS66 and MS65 as well as 1 that received the "details" mark on the holder, oops.

What makes this variety very special is the fact it remained under the radar for over 34 years. The reason for this was due to the fact it is not a easy double die to identify and if you dont know what to look for you may never find one. The doubling can be seen in greater detail on the second picture on the left side of the "O" in onza as well as the bottom of the date, the word Mexico, the 999 and the huge left toe on the angel. I like to call this the big toe double die. Because this is a very difficult variety to identify i think it will remain a very illusive coin to find.

To date, this coin is the highest known grade, MS68 pop 2, for all 1982 graded libertads. Highest known grade for a regular 1982 is MS67.
