Owner's Description

1866-S $20 No Motto AU50 NGC. The addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the double eagle in 1866 went into effect in Philadelphia immediately, although the new With Motto tail dies did not arrive at the San Francisco Mint until 120,000 No Motto pieces had already been coined. The latter issue is elusive and highly sought-after in all grades, with most known examples residing at the VF and XF levels; About Uncirculated coins are scarce and Mint State pieces are extremely rare, with the finest grading just MS62. This AU example is well-detailed, with deep olive-gold patina that shows remnants of luster in the protected regions. Scattered abrasions are present, as expected for an S-mint twenty in this grade.
