Owner's Description

1856-S $20 AU55 NGC. Though lightly worn, this early San Francisco double eagle retains considerable apricot-gold luster with an orange aspect that is more prominent on the obverse. The reverse is relatively clean, though a few sizable abrasions on and to the left of the bridge of Liberty's nose contribute to the grade
Thanks to several sizeable finds, the 1856-S is now the most plentiful San Francisco Mint issue in the Type I Double Eagle series after the 1857-S. This is good news for the numismatist as the '56-S is fairly easy to obtain in high grades with good eye appeal for type or date purposes. Most Choice AU and Mint State examples offered in today's market were discovered as part of the S.S. Central America treasure, this shipwreck yielding more than 1,000 pieces in various grades.
