Owner's Description
THIS is a very special coin. This issue usually comes so mushy that it looks less than fine even in mint state grades, so finding one strongly struck is unusual to say the least. The dies were probably used for a short production run and then left unattended for a while and developed heavy rust that caused the loss of detail, or the more popular theory is that the die was improperly annealed so it wore out very quickly. I personally question this, although I agree it is more likely, becuase gold is a much softer metal than even steel that isn't properly hardened, so I question whether that much wear could occur with a mintage as small as this one- only 31 thousand struck. A great condition rarity when considering the strike. looks more like a strong AU55, probably net graded because the graders weren't familiar with the date. One of my very favorites in the set.
