Owner's Description

Mintage: 4,366,234.
NGC Census + PCGS Pop.: 73 total; 9 at MS-65, 2 higher.
Type 2: "con barba" ("with beard"). Portrait of Alfonso XII at age 23. Engraved by Gregorio Sellán.
MSM = Morejón, Sala, Mendoza.
First year of Type 2.

Although Alfonso's portrait was reengraved for 1881, about 6 authenticated examples of 1881 Type 1 "sin barba" are known to exist. They are extremely rare and are not recorded in mint records. One came to auction in 2008 and sold for €77,000 plus 18% commission.
