Uncommon date, few survive. This example is very well struck. Only a few mint scratches hold it back from a higher grade.

Beginning in 1881 and continuing through the 1880s, Spain's government gold reserves dropped precipitously. By 1883 the Bank of Spain suspended convertibility of currency into gold. Lack of gold reserves and suspension of convertibility account for the drastic curtailment of gold coinage after 1881. Spain minted 34 million Alfonsinas in the six years from 1876 to 1881 and only 3 million in the five years from 1882 to 1886. No gold coins were minted in 1887 and 1888.
