Owner's Description

Winter Variety 1-A. This coin was purchased in March, 2007 when there were only three or four coins graded AU58. In the intervening years, there have been a lot of coins graded AU58; as of September, 2013, there are 14 grading events at this level. Clearly, there are a lot of duplicate submissions for the ’78-CC half eagle. In his 2001 reference on Carson City Gold, Doug Winter stated the following “This is not a well struck issue. Most 1878-CC half eagles show an overall softness which can easily be confused with wear. The obverse is nearly always at least a full grade lower in appearance than the reverse.” This coin represents that sentiment precisely. The obverse has a very soft strike while the reverse is very pleasing in that regard. The luster is satiny and highly reflective. The color is green gold with attractive rose gold undertones. Purchased from Ron Karp.
