Owner's Description

Winter Variety 2-A. Grainy texture subdues the luster on the obverse while the reverse has slightly more satin luster and beautiful cartwheel luster. The color is a pleasing green gold with orange gold “halos” surrounding the stars. This coin has the characteristic strike weakness on the obverse hair below LIBERTY and the ear. The reverse has a characteristically strong strike. Unlike many ’39-D, this coin has small die cracks on the obverse by stars 5 and 7. These cracks are accompanied by excess cast gold on the rim above these stars. The reverse has a strong die crack from the rim, between O and F. GreatCollections 6/13: 121359.
