Owner's Description

Dolley Madison was noted for her social gifts, which boosted her husband's popularity as President. In this way, she did much to define the role of the President's spouse, known much later by the title First Lady.
NOW YOU KNOW: When the British set fire to the White House in 1814, she was credited with saving the classic portrait of George Washington.
As a widow she lived in near poverty, aided only by her selling of her husbands papers. She had two children from her first marriage to John Todd, on of which perished during the yellow fever epidemic.
Dolley was the famous wife of President James Madison. She is best known for saving many papers of the state and a George Washington portrait, while fleeing the British invasion of Washington during the War of 1812.
She was very well known for her charm and tact.
The Silver Dollar Commemorative was issued to mark the 150th anniversary of her death.
She was also the First First Lady to be depicted on a United States coin.
