The U.S. Mint began sales of the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar on March 26th, 2009. The proof and the uncirculated coins were both struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The coins were sold seperately and the uncirculated version had an easy open capsule. Later the Mint released the Education set with an uncirculated coin and educational material about the Braille system, with examples. The maximum mintage for all the products failed to meet the established limit of 400,000. There were surcharges added to the cost of the coins were paid to the National Federation of the Blind to enhance further programs of the Braille literacy.
