Owner's Description

The 2005 Marine Corps Silver Dollar Commemorative was issued to celebrate the 230th anniversary of the Marines. The obverse is a depiction of the Marines hoisting a flag over Iwo Jima, which is also reminisce of the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington DC. The reverse shows a globe with an eagle.
It was authorized to mint 500,000, but the Treasury Secretary had authority to bump it up to 600,000 and the total sales across all option met that goal.
The Philadelphia Mint struck both the uncirculated and proof versions of this coin. This coin was a huge success, with the surcharges going to construct the Marine Corps Heritage Center in Quantico, Virginia.
