Owner's Description

British scientist James Smithson left his wealth to his nephew Henry Hungerford, however when Hungerford died childless, his estate passed to the United States of America to found at Washington under the name of the Smithsonian Institution an Establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.
FAST FACT: President Andrew Jackson dispatched to London Richard Rush in 1838 to bring 105 sacks containing 104,960 gold sovereigns (about 500,000) at the time, the monies passed to the US when Hungerford died.

Proof and uncirculated versions of the 1996 Smithsonian Silver Dollar. This marked the 150th anniversary of the establishment of it in August of 1846. Proof coins were struck in Philadelphia, and the uncirculated in Denver.The coins were offered individually in two or four coin sets, and as Young Collectors Sets containing only the proof Dollar. The obverse was done by Thomas D. Rogers, and the reverse by John Mercanti.
