Owner's Description

Mintage: 143,793. Population: 1904. Catalog #KM-324. NGC Universal ID: 28V9. Preissue mailer $29.00. Preissue Price: $33.00. Pre-issue Mailler: $33.00. Pre-issue Price: $37.00.
Both the proof and the uncirculated strikes were produced at the Philadelphia Mint for the 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Silver Dollar.The coins were offered by the US Mint individually or as part of a three coin set, in standard packaging or a simple mailer at a small reduced price.Only 35% of the 500,000 authorized were minted. Surcharges added to the cost of each coin benefited the construction of the visitor center under the East Plaza of the U.S. Capitol.
The visitor center is a large underground addition to the US Capitol complex which serves as a gathering point for up to 4,000 tourists and an expansion space for Congress. It is located below the East Front of the Capitol and its plaza, between the Capitol building and 1st Street East. The 580,000 square feet are below ground and on three floors.
