Mintage: 82,639. Population: 1534. NGC Universal ID: 28WT. Catalog #KM-455. Pre-issue Price: $31.95. Regular Price: $33.95.
Louis Braille Silver Dollar was issued by the United States Mint to commorate the 200th anniversary of his birth. He is the inventor of the reading system and writing for the blind and visually impaired. The silver dollar contained the first readable Braille characters to appear on a legal tender US coin.
The obverse features a image of Louis Braille. The reverse has an image of a child reading a Braille book. The Braille figures in the field "Braille" abreviated to "BRL" in Braille characters.
DID YOU KNOW? The Mint also released a Braille Education Set, which included the uncirculated coin, educational material about the Braille System, and examples of readable Braille.
Surcharges from the sale of the2009 Louis Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar were paid to the National Federation for the Blind to further programs to promote Braille literacy.
