The American Civil War aka, the War between the States or simply the Civil War, was a civil fought from 1861 to 1865 in the United States after many southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America. The remaining states were known as the "Union".

100 years of Civil War battlefields preservation was the reason for the commemoration of the 1995 Civil War Battlefields Silver Dollar.1895 was the establishment of the Gettysburg National Park.
The obverse of the silver dollar is a soldier offering a canteen to a wounded soldier.The reverse is of the Gettysburg landscape, and a quote from Joshua Chamberlain who actually fought in the battle.
