Owner's Description

In South Korea the war was usually referred to as "625" or the "6-2-5 Upheaval" reflecting to the date for which it started on 25 June. In North Korea the war was officially referred to as the "Fatherland Liberation War".
During the conflict, Seoul, the Capitol of South Korea was attacked numerous times to take control of it, however failing to do so literally destroyed the city. The armistice which was brokered in part by India is not a peace treaty at all, but basically a cease fire in which both sides are monitored by an international commission. Since 1953 a Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission made up by members of the Swiss and Swedish armed forces have been stationed at the DMZ.

The obverse of the 1991 Korean War Memorial Silver Dollar shows an image of a soldier attacking up a hill with ships in forground and jets above, and was designed by John Mercanti.
The reverse of the coin shows the two countries divided by the 38th parallel, and designed by James T. Ferrell.
The uncirculated coin was struck at the Denver Mint and the proof at the Philadelphia Mint.
Final sales were short of the maximum authorized and surcharges from the sale of the coins went towards the construction of the Korean War Veterans Memorial.
