Owner's Description

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France. It was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The designer, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi completed the head and arm before the torso, and these were on display at international expositions. Fundraising to complete the statue was difficult and the pedestal was nearly stopped being constructed. 120,000 contributions came in a this helped complete the statue. The United States Lighthouse Board administered in the early years until 1933 when the National Park Service took the reigns

In 1986 the Statue of Liberty Silver Dollar was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty.
The commemorative program of the United States Liberty Coins was the most successful to date. With a complete sell out of the 7 million silver dollars that was established as the maximum mintage.
$78 million raised in surcharges from the entire program of clad, gold, and silver coinage was used to fund the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and the centennial celebration.
The obverse features the Statue of Liberty and building on Ellis Island. The reverse shows the outreached arm of Liberty holding the torch to the sky.
