Owner's Description

Chester A Arthur, serving from 1881 through 1885, was a very unlikely President. Only three years before, he had been removed from his post as Chief Collector of the Port of New York where he had been placed by his good friend Senator Roscoe Conkling. Arthur had been made Garfields running mate to satify the Stalwarts, and with Garfields death, assumed the Presidency. The Stalwarts believed they now had an inside man with Arthur, but he surprised them all. Although a product of the corrupt system, he took up the mantle of reform from Garfield. Arthur had the Executive Mansion renovated, and one of the restorers was a young Louis Comfort Tiffany. Finally, Arthur had the US Navy overhauled and modernized, which allows the US to fight the Spanish-American War a decade later.
