Owner's Description

The election of 1876 was a circus, reminiscent of the battle between George Bush and Al Gore in 2000. The count from several states was in dispute, and months of recounts kept the country guessing as to who would be president. In the end, the Democrats dropped their resistance to the Republican Rutherford B Hayes, and he became President. Serving from 1877 through 1881, one of Hayes first actions was to remove the military protection from the Southern captials, allowing the Democrats to take control of the South. This tarnished Hayes name, it being suspected that he had made a backroom deal with the Democrats. He was given the nickname Ruther-Fraud Hayes, and would not serve a second term. His wife, Lucy Hayes, was known as Lemonaide Lucy because she banned liquor from the Executive Mansion. Hayes would start a campaign to reform the very corrupt civil service system, the mantle of which would be passed on to his successor. Hayes thought he was the best President since John Quincy Adams, with the execption of Abraham Lincoln.
