Owner's Description

Andrew Johnson, who served in office from 1865 through 1869, was lucky to be alive to do so. The night Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, he was also a target. Fortunately for him, the conspirator who was assigned to stab him got drunk and lost his courage. With the end of the Civil War, Johnson waited until Congress went out of session to begin a whirlwind effort to reconstruct the South on his terms. When Congress returned and saw this, they attempted to pass reconstruction legislature of their own, but each bill was vetoed by Johnson. This began a battle between the President and Congress that would end in the country's first impeachment. Johnson barely missed being impeached, but he had learned his lesson and the remainder of his term was relatively quiet.
