Owner's Description

Millard Fillmore was known as the Accidental President, because he gained his office due to the death of Zachary Taylor. He was, however, very qualified for the position. He had his own views, especially on slavery, and where Taylor rejected the Compromise of 1850, Fillmore signed it into law. Fillmore believed that slavery was protected by the constitution, and this failure to recognize the moral implications of the institution earned him a place at the bottom of the presidential ranking lists. As a final insult, future generations would form a Millard Fillmore society, and would gather at his grave site to lampoon his failed presidency.
