Owner's Description

Harrison's presidential legacy is virtually non-existant, since he died in 1841, only one month into his term. Harrison had been chosen as a candidate because he most resembled Andrew Jackson, and the Whigs thought he had the best chance of defeating Van Buren. Portrayed as a man of humble origins, many of his detractors cited his advanced age as problem. Harrison was actually well educated, and wanted to show not only his intelligence, but dispell doubts about his physical ability. Inaugurated on a cold March day, Harrison declined to where a hat or overcoat and gave the longest speech in inaugural history. Harrison caught a cold because of this, which turned to pneumonia and he died shortly after from complications, making him the first US President to die while in office.
