Owner's Description

With the War of 1812 over, the country saw a time of relative calm. It was into this atmosphere that James Monre took office, serving two terms from 1817 to 1825. Madison was the last of the Founding Father generation to hold office. Times were changing and the United States was expanding. In a famous speech, Monroe set forth the policy that European and other countries should not look to the 'New World' as a place for colonization. This policy would later come to be known as the 'Monroe Doctrine', and would set foriegn policy from that point on. It also marks another milestone in presidential history; the speech was not written by Monroe, but by then Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. The office of the president was becoming the central point of focus in the government, and the position of authority we know it to be today.
